March Madness Round 2! Womb Chair vs. Platner Chair

Two great chairs made it to round two of our Classic Chair March Madness challenge: only one will move on… and you get to decide which.

As you might have noticed, we’ve been getting a little chair crazy over here lately. That’s because we’ve dived headfirst into our first annual March Madness Classic Chairs competition. Welcome to Round 2: the Platner chair versus the Womb chair. We’ve asked designers from across the West to hype up their chair of choice below, but ultimately, you’ll help us decide. Vote in the comments below, or let us know on Twitter or Facebook which chair should move on to Round 3!

“While we love both chairs, the Platner chair has a leg up on sophistication and elegance. The graceful lines of curved metal are continuous and have no abrupt transitions, which makes it feel extremely detailed and resolved—depending on the finishes it can feel a bit more casual, but it can also be used in very high end and formal spaces, and the sophistication will actually make a space feel a bit more refined. I think this wider range of uses, in addition to having a smaller footprint, might give it an edge over the Womb chair.

The Womb is extremely iconic, but there’s a downside to that: it’s been used frequently and unfortunately had lots of reproductions and knock offs. The Platner is less used, which makes it a bit more special and unique, while still having the historical significance that make it a great purchase that can be passed down as a family heirloom.”

The Challenger: The Womb Chair

as defended by Jamie Hamilton and Greer Nelson, Oliver Simon Design

‘Today, more than ever before, we need to relax,’ said Eero Saarinen, designer of the Womb chair. When it comes to comfort, not many can top the relaxing womb chair. We like it over the Planter chair for exactly this reason. While the Planter chair is beautiful in its sculptural shape, it can be a little on the tippy side because of the pedestal base. The cool metal lines are gorgeous to look at, but are just not as inviting as the cozy, classic, Womb chair. An added plus for the Womb chair are the sizing options: it’s available in three sizes and both the standard and medium size have an accompanying ottoman, so you can put your feet up at the end of the day in style and comfort.”
