Surrey Wall Sconce Snags Nomination for London Design Awards

This wall sconce from south Surrey father-and-son team Karice was nominated for the Lighting Design Awards in London.

We love celebrating Canadian design, so we were thrilled to hear that Karice, a family-owned company based out of south Surrey, has been nominated for the Lighting Design Awards (this is like the Oscars of lighting design, people!) in the Architectural Luminaire Interior category.

Father Maurice Dery and his son Jordan have been designing and manufacturing lights for years, and were spurred on by the competition’s lack of creative development in wall sconces. “We wanted to do something really special in that product category,” says Jordan, whose Electron wall sconce ($1,600) sets itself apart with a futuristic design inspired by subatomic particles.

The sconce was modelled after an electron, and its minimalistic style hides a complex design. “It kind of looks like a lunar eclipse,” explains Jordan, “we loved the idea of designing a light that had a similar appearance.”

Aesthetic inspiration was plentiful for the team, but Maurice describes how designing a functional light was “a formidable challenge.” They had to find a way to attach the ring to the wall-mounting plate, create a path for LED wires and keep fasteners hidden so as to not detract from the look.

We’ve always loved showcasing West Coast craftsmanship. Some of the best stuff in the world is designed and produced here. And global recognition like this proves it. —Maurice Dery

A nomination for a European design award is a big deal for someone across the pond, and Maurice says that they “couldn’t be more honoured to showcase Canadian design and manufacturing to the world.” European designers are considered “the best of the best,” and the father-son team is proud that a Canadian company is challenging that preconception.

The Electron wall sconce is available in three finishes (silver, black anodized and gold anodized) to match your current decor, and three colour temperatures (3000K, 4500K and 9000K) to fit the needs of your space.

Not into the sconce? No problem, the Electron is also currently available as a pendant or chandelier. Karice is even working hard to unveil three new versions of the award-nominated product this Spring: table lamp, desk lamp and uplighter floor lamp. We’ll be keeping an eye out!
