National Doughnut Day: WL Staffers Pick Their Favourites

We’ve tasted a lot of doughnuts, but these four hit the sweet spot.

In honour of National Doughnut Day, we asked the editorial team at Western Living to publicly name their favourite doughnuts:

Anicka Quin, Editor-in-Chief:

Jelly Modern Peanut Butter Cup doughnut

Top doughnut pick: Peanut Butter Cup

From: Jelly Modern, Calgary

“Growing up in the suburbs, doughnut shops were the late-night hangouts of choice (the smell of cigarettes still makes me think of a honey glazed and a double double). Frankly I’m a sucker for peanut butter anything, and Jelly Modern’s raised doughnut dipped in peanut butter ganache, filled with peanut cream and topped with peanuts is the stuff I dream about at 2 a.m. on a Saturday night.”

Neal McLennan, Food & Travel Editor:

Top Doughnut Pick: Sour Cream Glazed

From: Tim Hortons

“I grew up in Alberta, so I don’t have that Central Canada love for Tim Hortons, but while I do love a highfalutin’ doughnut (the Blueberry Bourbon Basil from Portland’s Blue Star is something of a revelation), I don’t love it three times as much as the best doughnut on offer in any one of the 3,665 Tim Hortons across the country. (The coffee is still tragic however.)”

Stacey McLachlan, Associate Editor

Cartems Bee Sting doughnut

Top Doughnut Pick: Bee Sting

From: Cartems, Vancouver

“As a former beekeeper (although, really, does a beekeeper ever truly retire?), I was first drawn to the Bee Sting for its name, but the sweet-and-savoury parmesan honey doughnut would really have even the biggest melissophobic swooning. (Confession: I just looked that word up now. Even the oldest beekeeper can learn something new.)”

Julia Dilworth, Staff Writer:

Top Doughnut Pick: Pineapple Upside Downut

From: Lucky’s Doughnuts, Vancouver

“Unlike my least favourite pizza, Hawaiian, this use of cooked pineapple is a success! It’s a brand-new breed from Lucky’s and the brown sugar icing/candied pineapple combo makes it an easy favourite. And—spoiler alert—there’s creamy pineapple curd hidden in their too.”

We want to hear from you! What’s your favourite doughnut? The doughnut to end all doughnuts?
