#ICYMI: Video of the Samsung Junior Chef Challenge
All the high-stakes cooking drama caught on video at this year’s Vancouver Home and Design Show.
There was a knife-wielding teen showdown this past Saturday, October 24 at the Vancouver Convention Centre—on stage with celebrity chefs, no less. Contestants Madelyne (Maddie) Lemieux—paired up with Blacktail’s Geoff Rogers—and Matthew Tong (paired with Craig Scherer of Trattoria) took to the stage for the Samsung Junior Chef Challenge at the Vancouver Home and Design Show to make an entree and and dessert, with secret ingredients revealed just before the cooking started. For the entree: chicken breast, blueberries and dark chocolate chunks. For the dessert: sour cream and cinnamon sticks.
Chef Geoff and Maddie created brick-roasted chicken breast with savoury chocolate and blueberry sauce, chanterelle mushrooms and roasted root vegetables, and local greens; and for dessert, a microwave vanilla cake topped with crispy meringue, plums and pumpkin cheesecake mousse on the side.
Chef Craig and Matthew went for blueberry and goat cheese-stuffed chicken with homemade thyme gnocchi and dark chocolate drizzle. Dessert was an upside-down pear cake with caramel sauce and whipped cream.
Our own Greer Ross-McLennan assisted with judging (an aspiring 16-year-old chef herself)—check out her highlight reel of the moments before Chefs Craig and Matthew’s menu clinched the cup (or in this case, $5,000 worth of Samsung appliances.)
