On the weekend of May 24th important
buildings across the city will open their doors to the architecturally curious.
Originating in Glasgow in 1990, the Doors Open program allows onlookers to venture
into a variety of notable buildings that are usually off limits to the armchair
critic. In its fifth year in Winnipeg, the free event features 53 structures,
including the Grain Exchange Building, a muscular example of the Chicago Style
built in 1906; Douglas Cardinal’s Thunderbird House, a dynamic expression
of First Nations culture and spirituality; and the Red River College Princess
Street campus, which mixes restored 19th-century façades with innovative
green building techniques.—Alison Gilmor |
