A new downtown space celebrates one of the great West Coast artists.

His sculpture The Jade Canoe has a spot of honour at the Vancouver airport and his art single-handedly sparked a renaissance for the almost extinct Haida culture. Now considered the foremost Northwest Coast artist, Bill Reid will be further immortalized as the namesake of a new public art gallery opening on May 10. The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art will showcase Reid’s work in its inaugural show, Bill Reid: Master of Haida Art. Through a partnership with Simon Fraser University, the gallery will also present a lecture series; watch for dates and times to be announced in the coming months.—Susan Hollis
