CITY GUIDES: Vancouver

Neighborhood
Gastown Resurrection
From design stores to coffee houses, the new Gastown’s got it going on. Here are a few of our favourite stops.

  Sweet Escape
Start your day decadently at Café Medina with a chewy Belgian liege waffle topped with lavender milk chocolate or fig orange marmalade. Operated by the gang at next-door Chambar restaurant, the industrial-chic café opened a full-service kitchen with liquor licence in early summer, and will be Chambar’s private dining room by night.

  The New Collectibles
Robert Quinnell and partner David Keeler have curated a bold collection of home-decor essentials in their high-ceilinged, concrete-floored boutique, Provide. We especially love candlesticks inspired by nature from Roost; graphic pillows by Judy Ross Textiles; and smartly stylish Nespresso coffee machines.

  Cuts Above
Stop in at the butcher shop at So.Cial at Le Magasin, where sliced-to-order charcuterie is piled high on soft focaccia bread with homemade pickles, piccalilli (a relish of chopped veggies and mustard), heirloom tomatoes and havarti—hands-down, the best deli sandwich in the city. Hosting a soirée? Pick up a platter of organic, custom-cut meat, terrine, sausage and gourmet condiments for a no-brainer cocktail-party snack.

  The Shape of Things
State-of-the-art equipment, award-winning personal trainers, sweeping views of the North Shore mountains—if this isn’t enough to inspire a powerhouse workout at the brightly appointed Versus 21 fitness studio, it also offers mixed martial arts, ZenRide (which combines stationary cycling and yoga), and many other custom classes that move well beyond a routine workout. Classes start as late as 7:30 p.m. (ideal for workaholics) and trainers offer 30-minute private sessions for the time-crunched.

  Modern Digs
Koolhaus has settled in nicely at its new brick-and-beam locale on Water Street, which now offers a wider selection of contemporary furniture and accessor-ies. Notable for its extensive collection of Jonathan Adler’s Palm Beach-chic furniture line, Koolhaus also stocks work by the environmentally minded line Glowbal Views and abstract pottery by Brooklyn-based Klein Reid.
