East Meets Wet

A pair of early retirees gave up their hectic lives in Taiwan for the dream of an oceanside retreat in Ucluelet on Vancouver island. In the home that Blue Sky Architecture delivered, the bathroom typifies
their relaxed new lifestyle.

Bring the outside in with visual connections
A glass-walled shower exposes bathers to outdoor light and a waterfall that runs down basalt rock. (The waterfall is lit in the evening.) Pebble flooring reinforces the sense of outdoor showering and ties in with the rock visible through the glass.

Make the bathroom doubleas a dressing area
Behind those shoji screens (a reminder of the homeowners’ past journeys through Asia) lie generous closets for him and her.

Add a touch of the personal
Three miniature alcoves house a set of 1950s glass figurines, keepsakes from the couple’s travels-perfectly placed in the sight lines of anyone indulging in a long evening soak.
