1 Light Switch A woven, abstract light fixture by Peridot delivers bathtime mood lighting; it was turned upside down for a sea urchin effect. A pair of ovoid sconces by the vanity counters the dreaded under-eye circles created by overhead lights, and southeast-facing windows keep mornings fueled by daylight.
2 Keep It Real Smith and Helliwell come from a decidedly Arts and Crafts tradition, which they’ve married here to the modernist work of architect Barry Downs. Case in point: a cabin’s post-and-beam ceiling plays out in the inverted roof.
3 Glass Box Windows wrap the corner, giving anyone soaking in the Arcri-Tec tub a real sense of being immersed in wildlife. Mirrors were carried to the ceiling, too, so views literally fill the room.
4 Au Naturel "I’m constantly trying to convince clients to do this," says Smith of her open-ended shower. A slight curb limits overflow and Smith says you’d be surprised how dry the rest of the bathroom stays. "It feels like you’re showering on a deck in the woods," says Helliwell.
5 Warm Up For the countertop, a massive strip of redwood (a deadfall from California) retains a raw edge, with only the bark cleaned off. Finished with linseed oil and Varsol, the surface’s auburn lustre contributes to the room’s warmth. (Heated bluestone floor tiles don’t hurt, either.)
