1 Quick Change Artist The spa also acts as a changing room for the adjoining gym and the outdoor pool, so Hodgson created a change area, complete with a solid walnut bench and towel storage.
2 Scene Setter The lighting can shift to accommodate different scenarios, ranging from ultra bright for cleaning to a soft, candlelight glow for relaxation. Gorgeous silvered-glass pendant lights from Itre help counter shadows that the overhead trimless pot lights can cast on the face.
3 True Blue Hodgson kept the colour palette in the cool zone by using silver-toned touches throughout, from the white gold-leaf accent tiles to the polished stainless steel Kohler sink and the chrome Vola faucet. For an unusual shade like turquoise, it can be tricky to find a complementary shade on the counters. Backpainted glass-in just the right tone of blue-green-fits the bill.
4 In Living Colour The homeowner didn’t want white walls anywhere in the home, so Hodgson was forced to improvise away from her favourite look for a spa. The turquoise-which was also chosen, incidentally, as the hot colour for 2010 by the experts at Pantone-was meant as a breath of fresh air in the home, the rest of which is cast in a warm, earthy palette.
5 Floor Show Honed basalt tile is used on the floor for its low-slip factor. Smaller tiles in the shower both increase the anti-slip (more grout increases traction) and help to build a subtle angle toward the drain. Custom benches-perfect for soaking in the steam shower-are also crafted from slabs of basalt.
