IT STARTED OVER DINNER. Architect Jeremy Sturgess was over, and when you have an architect for supper, the conversation inevitably drifts toward the house. "We were talking about a problem with this one window," says Sturgess, who has been a friend of the homeowners since he redesigned their Lake Shebandowan cottage a few years back. "That turned into a remake of the entire house."
To be fair, the couple had been considering a move. They’d been searching for an acreage-she’s an avid horse jumper-but were reluctant to leave the conveniences of the city. The issue, they realized, had less to do with location and more to do with the home itself. One problematic window shone a light on the rest of the space-and so a year-long renovation began.
The original home lacked a place of prominence for the couple’s impressive art collection. To max out square footage, Sturgess knocked out the existing exterior wall and carved out a new, pie-shaped space, extending the house on an angle along the natural property line. A broad expanse of concrete acts as the display area for the artwork itself, and the room is flooded with natural light thanks to clerestory windows and a 40-foot flank of curving window wall that faces out to the yard. They call it the gallery: a showcase for the couple’s collection of works by Canadian artists like William Perehudoff and Cathy Daley.
The rest of the home needed a rethink as well. The husband loves to cook, so an expansive new kitchen sees crisp white back-painted glass paired with pale oak cabinets, and a massive centre island large enough to let guests chip in with the prep.
DEN: The landing at the top of the stairs makes a unique spot for a sweet setting of antique chairs and a painting by Christopher Kier. The old design had the living room and kitchen side by side, where now a double-sided fireplace, clad in travertine and detailed with a custom glass inlay, separates the two-perfect for entertaining, but less ideal for when the wife wants to socialize while he preps the meal. The solution: a cozy chair, tucked into the corner, for her to hang out while he buzzes around the room.
The former dining room was tucked behind the kitchen, to the right of the main entranceway. Sturgess placed it into a more natural location adjacent to the kitchen overlooking the yard while its former location became a roomy cloakroom and a marble-clad powder room.
Designer Nyla Free worked with the couple to bring a playful touch to the interior design. Free paired the modern architecture with unique and eye-catching furniture pieces that become conversation starters. In the dining room, she chose two Smoke chairs from Moooi-all elegant curves, their wooden frames charred and black-paired with classic-lined Ligne Roset dining chairs. Upstairs, a Kartell Ghost chair, cleverly outfitted with the image of a tufted cushion printed on its polycarbonate frame, adds a hit of colour in a soaring ensuite bathroom of white back-painted glass. And, in the adjoining master, tucked up against an oversize mirror, an antique armchair sits in the corner-its gilded frame and blue and gold damask fabric a warm counterpoint to the modern bedroom.
The home’s art collection and elegant new display space might give it an air of formality, but this is also a place that’s built for a celebration. Every year the couple’s Kentucky Derby party fills the house with dozens of guests, who perch on the impromptu seats Sturgess has incorporated into the architecture of the main floor-around the fireplace, on the steps up to the grand piano, or in the gallery itself.
Much like Free’s playful design within Sturgess’s elegant architecture, the home is a study in contrasts: formal and informal, modern and organic, serious but lighthearted-and a testament to the power of a great dinner party. wl
