White Space

In this Calgary condo, an oversize steam shower completes a sleek masculine design.

The showstopper While the crystal chandelier is a sparkly eye-catcher, it’s the oversize shower that commands attention. Designer Shane Rennie of Calgary’s Rectangle Design converted a walk-in closet into the 35-square-foot shower that dominates the space. Doubly nice are twin Hansgrohe rain showerheads positioned on opposite walls, perfect for couples who clean up together.

Colour Conscious “I wanted white and clean-looking,” says homeowner Peter Edgar. To that end, two-by-two-inch white tile on the floor gives way to white mosaic tile in the shower. High-gloss white cabinets meet an oblong washbasin from Duravit, a curvaceous counterpoint to the sharp lines of the rest of a room that is, of course, also white.

Spa Zone An extra-long bench suits anyone under six-and-a-half feet for a steam-shower-induced nap, and gives the space an upscale-fitness-club appeal. (Plus, the 18-inch-wide seat hides the plumbing that runs beneath.) Waterproof speakers from Kohler and dimmer-controlled industrial lighting inside the shower create a soothing sanctuary. “I start the day by relaxing before work,” says Edgar. “The steam, music, lighting—the shower definitely does that for me.”

Furnish It Though Edgar had his heart set on a black granite countertop, Rennie convinced him to go with a speckled grey, trowel-on synthetic stone that echoes a similar island in the kitchen. “I wanted a seamless look,” says Rennie. “With granite you’d have a joint, and I wanted to mould the material all the way around the cabinetry.” Like the wide frame around the mirror, the cabinets—constructed in Rectangle’s own shop—were made from MDF.

Hidden Asset A frosted glass door opposite the shower that slides on industrial-grade barn door hardware looks a lot like an entrance to another shower. In fact, it hides a 45-square-foot walk-in clothes closet located where the shower once was.
