A little-used room is transformed into a five-star bath

The showstopper Designer Susannah Walker wanted to preserve the historical integrity and character of the home of Vancouver Canadians owner Jake Kerr. (The Kerrs spent Christmases at this home, years before they acquired it; they’re old friends of the former owners.) Thinking Old World, she chose the bold and beautiful vintage-inspired clawfoot Cheviot bath, while a chandelier from The Cross in Vancouver adds a touch of luxury.

Colour Conscious The off-white colour scheme creates a serene atmosphere and timeless appeal, says Walker. Dark wood flooring provides balance.

Spa Zone While this bathroom’s traditional design precludes some of today’s home-spa accoutrements—no steam shower, meditation space or chromotherapy here—lighting plays a key role. A soak in the tub by firelight, with the chandelier dimmer set on low, creates a real chill-out zone.

Furnish It In keeping with the original fireplace and crown mouldings, Walker chose antique furnishings for the space. The dresser is a 19th-century dentist’s cabinet, complete with tiny compartments for
make-up, toiletries and necessities.

Hidden Asset Because the homeowners wanted his-and-hers quarters, Walker scoped out the home for an area spacious enough to become her bathroom. Surprise: this room is actually a former den—the fireplace is the giveaway.
