Into the Blue

With five children and four grandchildren, Bostonians-turned-Sunshine Coasters John and Jackie Buddle needed a kitchen able to flex from dinner for two to potlucks for plenty. D’Arcy Windbladt of Merit Kitchens created a seaside-inspired design.

Smart lighting design compensates for a lack of natural light
Well-placed pot lights and under-cabinet lighting create efficient task lighting, while hand-blown Murano glass pendants provide soft, decorative mood lighting over the breakfast bar in this windowless kitchen.

Choose a unifying theme for open-concept spaces
Jackie Buddle wanted the main floor to reflect the colours of the ocean and shore, so she opted for a single shade-Benjamin Moore’s Piedmont Gray, "a perfect washed-out sea colour"-for the kitchen, dining and living room walls.

Think big
A fishing dock lies right out front, so fresh crabs and prawns feature regularly on the menu. Naturally, Buddle’s favourite part of the kitchen is the pot-filler over the stove: it’s perfect for the heavy, oversize copper crab pot that’s always on the stovetop.

Make it personal
Buddle incorporates subtle nods to the room’s waterfront setting: from custom starfish drawer pulls to the frog-shaped copper bar sink, it’s the unique elements in the kitchen that make the space feel homey.
