The Inspiration
The client, an Amsterdam expat who calls both Switzerland and Calgary home, had very clear ideas about this space. “He wanted a contrast to his other residences,” says interior designer Andrea Raimondi of Calgary-based Ingenium Design Group. “Each residence with its own identity, this one being light and airy with an austere quality.”
The Plan
With an elevator on one side and a wrap-around deck on the other, the space dictated a linear-style kitchen—perfect for an owner who eschewed the more traditional U-shaped design. Upgrading mechanicals in the ceilings eliminated bulkheads and kept lines clean.

> Colour Key The simplicity of the design is emphasized by unified material choices. Silver-flecked white quartzite tops the island, playing up the stainless steel backsplash and appliances.
> Behind Closed Doors is backed with a mirror, giving the appearance of roominess and ensuring that nothing gets lost at the back. All the drawers and cabinets have been fitted with soft-close hardware from Germany’s Blum.
> Light Bright Light floods in from the wall of windows, while stylish Vitosi drop pendants provide task lighting over the island. Multi-coloured LED inserts, set in the stainless-steel baseboards, lend a warm glow and guide the way for a night visit to the fridge.
> Cabinet Shuffle Custom orange-laminate cabinetry pops against transparent heavy resin chairs. They flank a custom-made stainless-steel table, while the stainless-steel barstools from Italy, upholstered in white leather, complement the quartzite and steel island.
