Shopping Regina and Saskatoon

Don’t despair over the holiday shopping blitz—the solution is simple. Fewer. Better. Things. We’ve selected a few of our year-round favourites to give you a running start.

For the Outdoorsy Type
Garden Architecture More than a typical garden store, Garden Architecture’s romantic decor centre is lush with homewares like silvery damask wall hangings (starting at $75) and sparkling chandeliers (starting at $450). Head out to the auxiliary building for that someone on your list who likes to push evenings out on the deck as late as possible—in style. The Blomus fire pit ($750) is brushed stainless steel, making campfires and marshmallow roasting practically haute couture.

For the Individualist
Sew & Home Ground zero for modern design lovers in Saskatoon, this luxe home store offers plenty of big splurges for gift givers looking for a little more “me” on their list—sofas from Silva are beauties—but there are also terrific accessories for stocking stuffers and a little more. Look for vases from Western Canada’s Torre and Tagus (above), earthy decor options from 18Karat, or, for theatrical types, the hand-etched porcelain figurines from the Phillip Collection.

For the Big Splurge
Darrell Bell Gallery If you are at home on the range or the art gallery then may we suggest your big splurge be a Joe Fafard sculpture in honour of the great bovine. Prices start at $2,500 and go way, way up.

For the Luddite
Paper Umbrella You know the type: the one that laments how email has led to the disintegration of the English language (what happened to proper punctuation and capitalization?), who smugly states, “Oh, I don’t even own a TV,” as you rave about last night’s Lost. Feed their need for authenticity with one of Paper Umbrella’s hand-blown glass inkwell and glass styluses ($69). Even technogeeks can appreciate that the pen writes smooth as silk—and while you’re in the store, pick up a pack of fabulous Japanese paper for yourself. To, you know, write this vaguely familiar old thing called a letter.

For the Foodie
Mysteria Gallery The collection of local art here is always worth a stop-in—from Heather Cline’s mixed-media epics to Carole Epp’s quirky figurines—but its killer, must-have item for the foodies on your list is anything from Annie Michaud’s collection of blown glass. Elegant little salt dishes ($55), a fantastical citrus reamer ($42), an alien-like mortar and pestle ($100): they’re the perfect example of form and function, and almost too pretty to use.
Almost. 2706 13th Ave., Regina, 306-522-0080, mysteria.ca

For the Animal Lover
Blossoms Flower shops are a great spot for hostess gifts (like cute Francoise Paviot serviettes, $7.95-$12.95), but our personal favourite is the carved wooden deer heads ($250-$450) from Roost. A little decor for the homeowner who says, I’d never hunt one of ’em, but I sure do like the way they look. #111-1526 8th St. E., Saskatoon, 306-955-3355

For the Green Thumb
Early’s Farm and Garden Centre First there was the 100-mile diet, now the kitchen-counter gourmet. Early’s, the garden centre that’s got vintage charm written all over it, has got it covered with the Aerogarden ($169.99). The all-in-one light source, planter and seed pack kit comes with such varieties as the salsa garden (jalapenos, tomatoes), salad greens and Italian herb packs—even green beans. Pop in a seed pod, water, and voilà: within three to four weeks, you’ll be dining on tabletop greens.

For the Homebody
Willow Studio During the holiday season it’s a safe bet to stroll Cathedral Village for gift options, or even something a little larger. Willow Studio’s home furnishings line is perfect for a homes splurge this season—it is the exclusive carrier of Bugatti home furnishings, and has recently introduced the retro-modern-styled Skypad sofas. We particularly love the Suzie sofa ($1,400), with its grandma-chic blue tweed finish and classic roll-pillow details. 3424 13th Ave., Regina, 306-522-9226, willowstudio.ca

For the Oenophile
Modern Country Interiors For the person who’s a wine-with-dinner sort but shrugs at the concept of a wine cave, Modern Country Interiors’ hand-crafted wine buffet (from $1,840) is the perfect fit for showcasing a vino collection. Available in pine, maple or alder and in 27 different tints or stains, the buffet stores up to 32 bottles as well as all the accessories: glasses, cocktail shakers, whatever you need for a Friday night dinner party. Not quite the right fit? They’ll also custom build for any space. $2,000 to $2,700.

For the Insomniac
Crocus & Ivy Yes, the bed itself is a key part of a good night’s sleep. But the sheets? That’s the icing on the 400-thread-count cake. Crocus & Ivy’s home collection is a visual feast: from retro-designed Gold Coaster lamps to Denby cookware and French-milled soaps. But it’s the Pine Cone Hill bedding collection that’s the showstopper. Ranging from vibrant fuchsias and playful stripes to classic floral quilts and crisp white sheets, the designs are both classic and creative. And so, so soft.
