Shopping Calgary

Don’t despair over the holiday shopping blitz—the solution is simple. Fewer. Better. Things. We’ve selected a few of our year-round favourites to give you a running start.

For the Oenophile
Koolspace Carrying everything from oxidation corkscrews to decanters, this is the go-to shop for the wine-lover. And for those who need to keep their premier cru at its premium, the storage possibilities are endless. Start with the Vintage Keeper Nuovo, with a capacity of up to 500 bottles, and then move on up to the Marvel Luxury or Chateau series, which come in a variety of configurations and store red and white vintages. Once you’ve outgrown your fridge, have Koolspace build you a custom cellar.

For the Nester
Valerianne In search of a good night’s sleep? These sheets, duvets, bedspreads and throws work well undercover. Sferra sheets from Italy will have you drooling before your head hits the pillow. Made of fine Egyptian cotton and with a thread count of 590 or 1,020, they’ll ensure you’ll be hard-pressed to crawl out of bed in time for your morning meeting.

For the Fashionista
Home Evolution Leave it to Home Evolution to carry the who’s who of furnishing, linens and tabletop, including designs by Martha Stewart, Jasper Conran and Vera Wang. Like most fashion designers, Vera Wang has expanded her empire to include lifestyle products like fragrances, handbags and tableware. Her dinnerware line in bone white with warm sable brown and platinum accents will add a sophisticated flair to any table. It’s versatile and never out of style.

For the Naturalist
Willow Studio Combining a long-time love of fabric design with an appreciation for nature, owner Sandra Young (who also does custom interiors) has created a line that includes a variety of statement pieces. Our favourite is the Natural Habitat Collection, a line of throw cushions decorated with photos of the great outdoors (taken by Young) and transferred onto the fabric.

For the Foodie
Collatio All kinds of small luxuries, from Diptyque candles to Wolford underpinnings, grace this one-of-a-kind retailer in nearby Priddis. Hard to resist are the foodie treasures like Dean & DeLuca spices or a set of handcrafted Laguiole steak knives from France. With stainless steel, hand-forged blades and a choice of handles (olivewood, rosewood and even acrylic bull horn), the tabletop decorating options are endless.

For the Art-Lover
Rubaiyat Gallery Co-owner Pam Haight imports all sorts of wondrous artisanal goodies from teak furnishings to Asian pottery to glass art. We love the Three Banded Bowls by glassblower and California artist Caleb Siemon. These pieces are contemporary in design and yet sensual in their use of colours.
